This belonged to the Air Force when they gave it to us to honor Dick Bong.
It was in Poplar, Wisconsin, sitting on the ground.
So it's sat there for many years.
After all that time, it was starting to deteriorate.
Put an airplane outside under an airplane like this under cover, it isn't going to last because they're not built to last either going to be shot down or taken out of service.
About that time, I became the commander up at the Air Guard base.
We moved the airplane up to the guard base at Duluth, and there were about five or six guys that volunteered to take this thing apart and put it back together again.
It took a couple of years, and so they actually built parts, machine parts after duty hours.
But you get in there and that's the same as a cockpit that would have come off the production line in World War Two.
They got the instruments, They built the panel.
They built the seats.
In order to bring it back and take the wings off they screwed it together.
Those five guys put it back together again.
And we had the grand opening.
